How it works

Expresses that one single condition is all that is needed: 'as long as / if only X, then Y.' It stresses that nothing else matters. With verbs the common pattern is Vます-stem + さえ + すれば; with nouns it's Noun + さえ + …ば.

ある一つの条件さえ満たせば十分だ、という強調表現。「Xさえ~ば、Y」で「Xさえあれば/すれば、他は問題ない」を表す。動詞では「ますstem+さえすれば」、名詞では「名詞+さえ~ば」の形になる。

Formation

Noun + さえ + Vば/Aければ;Vます-stem + さえ + すれば;なadj + でさえあれば

Examples

  • おかねさえあれば、なんでもかえる。

As long as I have money, I can buy anything.

  • くすりをのみさえすれば、すぐによくなりますよ。

If you just take the medicine, you'll get better right away.

  • てんきさえよければ、あしたはでかけよう。

As long as the weather is good, let's go out tomorrow.

Notes

  • The verb pattern is Vます-stem + さえすれば (飲みさえすれば), not 飲むさえ.動詞は「ますstem+さえすれば」(飲みさえすれば)。「飲むさえ」は誤り。
  • Emphasizes a single sufficient condition; 'nothing else is needed.'「これ一つさえ満たせばよい」という唯一の十分条件を強調する。
  • Noun + さえ + あれば/よければ is very common for 'as long as there is / is good.'「名詞+さえあれば/よければ」の形が特に多い。
