How it works

Attaches to the verb stem (ます-form minus ます) to express that one subject does two actions simultaneously. The main action is the one in the second clause; the ながら clause is the accompanying, usually secondary action. Both actions must be performed by the same person.

Formation

Examples

I study while listening to music.

He is reading the newspaper while drinking coffee.

Please don't talk on the phone while walking.

Notes

  • Both actions must share the same subject—you cannot use ながら for two different people's actions.
  • The more important/main action goes in the second (main) clause.
  • Attach to the ます-stem, not the dictionary form (食べながら, not 食べるながら).
