How it works

Used to describe a third person's desire to do something, based on observable signs. The pattern is Vます-stem + たがる, and ~たがっている (the ている form) is most common, expressing an ongoing/observed wish. Because you cannot read others' minds directly, this 'shows wanting' form is used instead of plain ~たい for other people.

Formation

Examples

The child wants to play outside.

My little brother wants a new game.

He doesn't want anyone to hear that story.

Notes

  • Use ~たがる/たがっている for third persons, not for yourself; for yourself use ~たい.「~たがる/たがっている」は第三者に使い、自分には使わない。
  • The object often takes を with ~たがる (ゲームを欲しがる), whereas ~たい can use が or を.「~たがる」では目的語に「を」を取ることが多い(ゲームを欲しがる)。
