How it works

Primarily used to give one or more representative examples ('such as ~, and so on'), implying there are other similar items. It can also add a nuance of downplaying or contempt ('something like ~ (of all things)'). The more formal written equivalent is なんか (casual) / 等(など).

Examples

On the weekend I want to do various things such as shopping and movies.

Among fruits, I like things like apples and mandarins.

Someone like me still has a lot more to study.

Notes

  • Often pairs with や for listing examples: AやBなど.
  • ~なんか is the casual spoken form; ~など is neutral/written-friendly.「~なんか」はくだけた話し言葉、「~など」は中立的で書き言葉にも使える。
  • With 私など it shows humility; with others (君など) it can sound dismissive, so use with care.「私など」は謙遜を表すが、他人に対して「君など」と言うと見下す響きになるので注意。
