～さえ

How it works

An emphatic particle meaning 'even', citing an extreme or surprising example to imply 'if even this, then certainly others/more.' Often attaches as ～でさえ to subjects/topics. It highlights something unexpected ('even a child can do it' implies it's very easy).

「～でさえ・～までも」の意味の強調の助詞。極端な例を挙げて「これでさえそうなら他は当然」と暗示する。主語・話題には「～でさえ」の形でつくことが多い。意外な例を強調する（「子どもでさえできる」＝とても簡単だと暗示）。

Examples

• そんなことは子どもでさえ知っている。

  そんなことはこどもでさえしっている。

  Even a child knows something like that.

• 忙しくて、昼ご飯を食べる時間さえなかった。

  いそがしくて、ひるごはんをたべるじかんさえなかった。

  I was so busy I didn't even have time to eat lunch.

• 専門家にさえ、その質問は難しかった。

  せんもんかにさえ、そのしつもんはむずかしかった。

  Even for the experts, that question was difficult.

Notes

• For people/subjects, でさえ is common (先生でさえ); after other particles it can be に＋さえ, etc.人・主語には「でさえ」が多い（先生でさえ）。他の助詞のあとは「にさえ」などになる。
• Don't confuse with まで ('even up to') — さえ emphasizes an extreme minimal/surprising example.「まで」（～までも）と混同しないこと。「さえ」は極端・意外な例を強調する。
• Combine with ～ば for the 'if only' pattern: ～さえ～ば.「～ば」と組み合わせると「～さえ～ば（条件の強調）」になる。
