How it works

Indicates that something happens right at the peak or height of an ongoing action or event, often an interruption. It stresses that you were fully engaged in the activity at that exact moment. Typically the interrupting event is unexpected or inconvenient.

ある動作・出来事がちょうど一番盛んに行われている、まさにその途中に別のことが起こることを表す。多くは予期しない・都合の悪いことが起こる場合に使い、「まさにその時」という感じを強調する。

Formation

Vている + 最中に;N + の最中に

Examples

  • しょくじをしているさいちゅうに、でんわがかかってきた。

Right in the middle of eating, a phone call came in.

  • かいぎのさいちゅうにいねむりをしてしまった。

I dozed off right in the middle of the meeting.

  • はなしているさいちゅうにくちをはさまないでください。

Please don't interrupt while I'm in the middle of talking.

Notes

  • 最中に focuses on the peak of an action and usually pairs with a single interrupting event, not a long parallel action.「最中に」は動作の一番盛んな時点に注目し、後ろには邪魔・割り込みのような一回的な出来事が来ることが多い。
  • Use 〜ている最中に for verbs and 〜の最中に for nouns; the に can be dropped only in some set phrases.動詞は「~ている最中に」、名詞は「~の最中に」。
