とおり

How it works

Indicates that something is done exactly in the manner described or expected. After a verb it can be plain present (Vる + とおり, the way ~) or past (Vた + とおり, just as ~ did/happened). After a noun, use N + のとおり with の: 説明のとおり. As a suffix attached directly to a noun it often becomes どおり (rendaku): 予定どおり.

ある動作や状態が、述べた・予想したのと全く同じやり方で行われることを表す。動詞の場合は「Vるとおり」「Vたとおり」、名詞の場合は「Nのとおり」。名詞に直接つくときは連濁して「~どおり」になることが多い(例:予定どおり)。

Formation

Vる/Vた + とおり(に);N + のとおり(に);N + どおり(に)

Examples

  • せんせいがいったとおりにかいてください。

Please write it the way the teacher said.

  • わたしのよそうしたとおり、かれがいちいになった。

Just as I expected, he came in first.

  • でんしゃはじかんどおりにつきました。

The train arrived right on time.

Notes

  • When attached directly to a noun it usually rendakus to ~どおり (時間どおり, 予定どおり); with の it stays とおり (説明のとおり).名詞に直接つくときは「~どおり」と濁ることが多い(時間どおり、予定どおり)。「の」を挟むと「とおり」のまま(説明のとおり)。
  • Vた + とおり emphasizes that the result matched what was said/expected before.「Vたとおり」は、前に言った・予想したこととまさに一致したことを強調する。
