How it works
Marks a period of time during which a single, momentary action occurs (with に). 〜間に means the action happens at some point within the span. Without に, 〜間 means an action continues throughout the entire span (parallel ongoing actions). Compare to 〜うちに, which adds the nuance of acting before a change.

Notes
- 間に (with に) = a momentary action at some point in the span; 間 (without に) = an action lasting the whole span.「間に」はその期間中の一点での動作、「間」(にを付けない)はその期間ずっと続く動作。
- Unlike うちに, 間に simply marks the time span and does not stress 'before a change'.「うちに」と違って、「間に」は単に時間の範囲を示すだけで、変化の前にという含みは薄い。
