How it works

Te-form + はいけない expresses prohibition ("must not ~"). It states that an action is not allowed, often as a rule or instruction from someone in authority.

Formation

Examples

You must not take photos here.

You must not run in the hallway.

You must not sleep during class.

Notes

  • It is the negative answer to a ~てもいいですか permission question.「〜てもいいですか」と許可を求める質問への否定の答えになります。
  • In casual speech ~ては often contracts to ~ちゃ (寝ちゃいけない), ~では to ~じゃ (飲んじゃいけない).
