How it works

~はずだ expresses the speaker's logical expectation or conviction based on evidence or reasoning: 'it should be the case that...' It is a confident inference, stronger than ~でしょう, drawn from facts the speaker knows. It does not express the speaker's own intention.

話し手が根拠や理由に基づいて『当然そうだ』と論理的に推測・確信することを表します。知っている事実から導く推量で、「~でしょう」より確信度が高い表現です。自分の意志を表すのには使いません。

Formation

Verb (plain) / い-adj (plain) / な-adj + な / Noun + の + はずだ

Examples

  • かれはきのうしゅっぱつしたから、もうついているはずだ。

He left yesterday, so he should have arrived by now.

  • このみせはにちようびはやすみのはずです。

This shop should be closed on Sundays.

  • ちゃんとべんきょうしたのだから、しけんはかんたんなはずだ。

Since I studied properly, the exam should be easy.

Notes

  • な-adjectives connect with な (簡単なはず) and nouns with の (休みのはず).な形容詞は「な」(簡単なはず)、名詞は「の」(休みのはず)で接続します。
  • Use ~はずだった to mean 'was supposed to be (but wasn't),' indicating something contrary to expectation.「~はずだった」は『~のはずだったのに(実際は違った)』と、予想に反する事態を表します。
  • ~はずだ is an inference about facts, not a statement of personal will; do not use it for your own intentions.事実についての推量であり、自分の意志を述べる表現ではない点に注意します。
