ようとおもう

How it works

Attaches to the volitional form of a verb to express the speaker's intention or decision to do something. ~ようと思う suggests a plan formed around the moment of speaking (a somewhat fresh decision), while ~ようと思っている implies the intention has been held for some time and is ongoing.

動詞の意志形(~よう/~おう)に付いて、これから何かをしようという話し手の意志や決意を表す。「~ようと思う」はその場で決めたニュアンス、「~ようと思っている」は前から考えている継続的な意志を表す。

Formation

Verb volitional form (~よう/~おう/~しよう) + と思う/と思っている

Examples

  • しゅうまつはいえでゆっくりやすもうとおもいます。

I'm thinking of relaxing at home this weekend.

  • らいねんからにほんごのべんきょうをつづけようとおもっています。

I've been thinking of continuing my Japanese studies from next year.

  • なつやすみにくにへかえろうとおもっているんです。

I'm planning to go back to my home country during summer vacation.

Notes

  • Use 思っている (not 思う) when talking about someone else's intention; first-person plain 思う is limited to your own decision at the moment of speaking.第三者の意志を言うときは「~ようと思っている」を使い、「~ようと思う」は基本的に自分の今の決意に限られる。
  • The verb before と思う must be in volitional form (行こう, 食べよう, しよう), not dictionary form.「と思う」の前は必ず意志形(行こう・食べよう・しよう)にする。辞書形は誤り。
  • Compare with つもりだ, which expresses a firmer, more settled intention.「つもりだ」はより固まった意図を表すので比較して覚えるとよい。
