How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to indicate that an action begins suddenly or unexpectedly. Compared with ~はじめる, ~だす emphasizes the abrupt, often uncontrollable onset, so it is rarely used for planned or intentional starts.

Formation

Examples

The baby suddenly burst into tears.

The sky grew dark and it started to rain.

Hearing that story, everyone burst out laughing.

Notes

  • Use the ます-stem: 降りだす (correct), not 降るだす.
  • ~だす stresses a sudden/unexpected start; for a neutral, planned start use ~はじめる.~だすは突然・思いがけない開始を強調します。
  • Because the start is involuntary, ~だす is awkward with intentional commands like 'Let's start.'
