かける

How it works

Attached to a verb stem, it means an action has been started but not finished (half-done), or is just on the verge of happening. It captures the 'midway' or 'about to' point of an action.

動詞のます形語幹について、動作を始めたがまだ終わっていない(途中・やりかけ)、またはまさに~しそうな状態を表します。動作の「途中」や「~しかけ」を捉える表現です。

Formation

Verb ます-stem + かける (e.g. 食べる → 食べかける、言う → 言いかける). Noun form: ~かけ (食べかけ); attributive: ~かけの.

Examples

  • なにかいいかけて、かれはきゅうにだまってしまった。

He started to say something, then suddenly fell silent.

  • テーブルのうえに、たべかけのパンがおいてある。

There's a half-eaten piece of bread left on the table.

  • でんちがきれかけているので、じゅうでんしてください。

The battery is about to die, so please charge it.

Notes

  • ~かけ is the noun form ('half-done thing'); ~かけの + noun modifies (食べかけのパン).「~かけ」は名詞形(やりかけのもの)、「~かけの+名詞」で修飾。
  • Connects to the ます-stem: 読む→読みかける, 死ぬ→死にかける (nearly died).ます形につく:読む→読みかける、死ぬ→死にかける(死にそうになる)。
  • Don't confuse with the separate verb ~かける meaning 'to do (an action) toward someone' (話しかける = speak to).「話しかける(相手に~する)」の「かける」とは別なので注意。
