～なおす

How it works

Attaches to the verb stem to mean doing an action over again, usually because the first attempt was unsatisfactory or to improve it. It conjugates as a regular う-verb (なおす → なおして, なおした).

動詞のます形の語幹に付いて、ある動作をもう一度やり直すことを表します。多くは最初の結果が不十分だったり、より良くするために行います。なおすは五段動詞として活用します（なおして、なおした）。

Formation

Vます-stem + なおす (e.g. 書き + なおす → 書きなおす)

Examples

• 間違えたので、レポートを書きなおした。

  まちがえたので、レポートをかきなおした。

  I made a mistake, so I rewrote the report.

• もう一度よく考えなおしてください。

  もういちどよくかんがえなおしてください。

  Please think it over carefully one more time.

• 電話が切れたので、かけなおします。

  でんわがきれたので、かけなおします。

  The call dropped, so I will call back again.

Notes

• Use the ます-stem: 書きなおす (correct), not 書くなおす.ます形の語幹に付けます。書きなおす（○）／書くなおす（×）。
• Don't confuse the suffix なおす with the verb 治す ('to cure/heal'); the redo suffix is written in kana or 直す.接尾語の～なおす（直す）と動詞の治す（病気を治す）を混同しないようにしましょう。
• It implies a redo to correct or improve, not merely repeating an identical action.単なる反復ではなく、修正・改善のためにやり直すニュアンスがあります。
