How it works
Attaches to the verb stem (ます-form minus ます) to express that an action continues over a period of time. It conjugates like the regular verb 続ける (continue), so it can take tense, negative, and te-forms.
動詞のます形の語幹（ますを取った形）に付いて、ある動作がある期間にわたって続くことを表します。続ける自体が動詞なので、時制・否定・て形などに活用できます。
Formation
Vます-stem + つづける (e.g. 食べ + つづける → 食べつづける)
Examples
彼は三時間も走りつづけた。
かれはさんじかんもはしりつづけた。
He kept running for as long as three hours.
雨が降りつづけているので、試合は中止になった。
あめがふりつづけているので、しあいはちゅうしになった。
Because it keeps raining, the match was canceled.
夢をあきらめずに努力しつづけることが大切だ。
ゆめをあきらめずにどりょくしつづけることがたいせつだ。
It is important to keep making an effort without giving up on your dreams.
Notes
- Use the ます-stem, not the plain form: 食べつづける (correct), not 食べるつづける.ます形の語幹に付けます。食べつづける（○）／食べるつづける（×）。
- It implies a sustained, ongoing action. For a state continuing, ～ている is often more natural.持続的・継続的な動作を表します。状態の継続には～ているが自然なこともあります。
- Contrast with ～つづく (intransitive: continues by itself) vs ～つづける (transitive: someone keeps doing it).自動詞の～つづく（ひとりでに続く）と他動詞の～つづける（人が続ける）を区別しましょう。
