How it works
A compound verb attached to a verb stem to express the beginning of an action or change. It marks the point where an action gets underway, e.g. 'started to rain,' 'began studying.'
動詞のます形語幹について、動作や変化の開始を表す複合動詞です。「降り始める」「勉強し始める」のように、動作が始まる時点を示します。
Formation
Verb ます-stem + はじめる (e.g. 食べる → 食べはじめる、読む → 読みはじめる、する → しはじめる). Conjugates as an ru-verb (始めた、始めて).
Examples
急に雨が降りはじめた。
きゅうにあめがふりはじめた。
It suddenly started to rain.
去年から日本語を習いはじめました。
きょねんからにほんごをならいはじめました。
I started learning Japanese last year.
桜が咲きはじめると、春が来たと感じる。
さくらがさきはじめると、はるがきたとかんじる。
When the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, I feel that spring has come.
Notes
- Connects to the ます-stem, not the dictionary form: 食べはじめる (not 食べるはじめる).ます形につく:「食べはじめる」(×食べるはじめる)。
- ~はじめる (start) contrasts with ~だす (suddenly start); ~だす often feels more abrupt/unexpected.「~はじめる」は開始一般、「~だす」は突然・急に始まる感じが強い。
- Conjugates like a normal ru-verb: はじめる→はじめた→はじめている.一段動詞として活用:はじめる→はじめた→はじめている。
