How it works

Two main uses: (1) with numbers/quantities/time it means 'about, approximately'; (2) with verbs/situations it indicates degree, 'to the extent of (something trivial or extreme).' くらい and ぐらい are interchangeable; ぐらい is slightly more casual/spoken.

主な用法は二つ。(1)数・量・時間につけて「およそ・約」の概数を表す。(2)動詞や状況につけて程度を表し、「~くらい(ささいな/極端な度合い)」を示す。「くらい」と「ぐらい」は同じで、「ぐらい」がやや口語的。

Formation

Number/Noun + くらい/ぐらい;Verb・いadj (plain) + くらい;なadj + な + くらい

Examples

  • えきまであるいてじゅっぷんぐらいかかります。

It takes about ten minutes to walk to the station.

  • じぶんのへやぐらいじぶんでそうじしなさい。

At least clean your own room yourself.

  • かなしくて、なきたいくらいだった。

I was so sad I felt like crying.

Notes

  • For approximate amounts, くらい/ぐらい is interchangeable with ほど and 約; くらい is the most casual.概数では「ほど」「約」と置き換え可能で、「くらい」が最もくだけている。
  • When indicating 'at least this trivial thing,' it carries a dismissive nuance (部屋ぐらい掃除して).「これくらいのささいなこと」の意味では、軽く見るニュアンスが出る(部屋ぐらい掃除して)。
  • ぐらい is generally more colloquial than くらい, but both are fine in most contexts.「ぐらい」のほうがやや口語的だが、どちらもほぼ自由に使える。
