How it works

Used in comparisons to mean 'A is not as ... as B.' The structure is 'B ほど A は ~ない', stating that A does not reach the level/degree of B. The standard of comparison (B) takes ほど, and the predicate is negative.

比較で「AはBほど…ない(=AはBには及ばない)」を表す。「Bほど Aは~ない」の形で、AがBの程度に達しないことを示す。比較の基準(B)に「ほど」をつけ、述語は否定形になる。

Formation

Noun + ほど + …ない;Verb (plain) + ほど + …ない

Examples

  • ことしのふゆはきょねんほどさむくない。

This winter isn't as cold as last year.

  • わたしはあにほどせがたかくない。

I'm not as tall as my older brother.

  • このもんだいはおもったほどむずかしくなかった。

This problem wasn't as difficult as I thought.

Notes

  • The standard you compare against takes ほど; the verb/adjective is negative.比較の基準に「ほど」をつけ、述語は否定形にする。
  • Means 'A doesn't reach B's level' — so A < B, not A = B.「AはBに及ばない」(A<B)という意味で、同等ではない。
  • Compare with より, which is used in affirmative comparisons (AよりBのほうが).肯定の比較には「より」を使う(AよりBのほうが)。
