have to / must (casual)

JLPT
N4
Register
casual

How it works

A casual, spoken contraction of ~なければ(ならない/いけない). It expresses obligation or necessity ('I have to'). The trailing ならない/いけない is usually dropped in speech, so ~なきゃ on its own already means 'I gotta'.

Formation

Examples

    I have to go now.

I have a test tomorrow, so I have to study today.

I have to take my medicine, but I forgot.

Notes

  • なきゃ comes from なければ; なくちゃ (from なくては) means the same thing and is equally casual.「なきゃ」は「なければ」、「なくちゃ」は「なくては」が縮まった形で、意味はほぼ同じ。
  • In casual speech the ならない/いけない is often dropped: 「行かなきゃ」 alone means 'I gotta go.'
  • Avoid in formal writing or polite business situations; use ~なければなりません there.
