How it works

~ように言う is used to report an indirect instruction, request, or warning — telling someone to do (or not do) something. The verb 言う can be replaced with 伝える, 頼む, 注意する, etc. For negative instructions, use the ない-form: ~ないように言う.

~ように言うは、誰かに「~して(しないで)ほしい」という指示・依頼・注意を間接的に伝える表現です。「言う」は「伝える・頼む・注意する」などに置き換えられます。否定の指示はない形を使い「~ないように言う」とします。

Formation

Verb dictionary form / Verb ない-form + ように + 言う(伝える・頼む・注意する 等)(例:休む→休むように言う、遅れる→遅れないように言う)

Examples

  • せんせいはがくせいに、まいにちふくしゅうするようにいいました。

The teacher told the students to review every day.

  • ははに、ばんごはんはいらないとつたえるようにいわれた。

I was told (by someone) to let my mother know I won't need dinner.

  • いしゃに、おさけをのまないようにいわれました。

The doctor told me not to drink alcohol.

Notes

  • Mark the person who receives the instruction with に. The instructed action goes in plain dictionary/ない form before ように.指示を受ける相手は「に」で示します。指示の内容は辞書形/ない形+ように。
  • The passive ~ように言われる ('to be told to ~') is very common when reporting instructions you received.自分が受けた指示を伝えるときは受身の「~ように言われる」がよく使われます。
