How it works

Dictionary form + のに expresses the purpose or use for which something is needed/useful/used. Here の nominalizes the verb and に marks purpose, so it typically pairs with words like 使う, 必要だ, 便利だ, かかる. This is different from the contrastive のに ('although').

辞書形+のには、何かが必要・便利・役立つ目的や用途を表します。ここでの「の」は動詞を名詞化し、「に」が目的を示すので、「使う・必要だ・便利だ・かかる」などと結びつきます。逆接の「のに(~なのに)」とは別物です。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + のに(+ 使う/必要だ/便利だ/いい/かかる など)(例:開ける→開けるのに)

Examples

  • このはさみはかみをきるのにべんりです。

These scissors are handy for cutting paper.

  • えきまでいくのにさんじゅっぷんかかります。

It takes thirty minutes to get to the station.

  • このどうぐはびんをあけるのにつかいます。

This tool is used for opening bottles.

Notes

  • Purpose のに follows a dictionary-form verb and pairs with 使う/必要だ/便利だ/かかる. Do not confuse with contrastive のに ('even though'), which follows plain form with a surprising result.目的の「のに」は辞書形に付き、「使う・必要だ・便利だ・かかる」などと結びつきます。逆接の「のに(意外な結果)」と混同しないようにしましょう。
  • Use ~ために for a goal you act toward (将来のために貯金する); use ~のに for the use/function of a thing or the cost of an action.行為の目標には「~ために」、物の用途や行為に必要なコストには「~のに」を使います。
