～おわる

How it works

A compound verb attached to a verb stem to express completing an action—doing something all the way to the end. It is the natural counterpart to ～はじめる.

動詞のます形語幹について、動作を最後までやり終えることを表す複合動詞です。「～はじめる」と対になる表現です。

Formation

Verb ます-stem + おわる (e.g. 食べる → 食べおわる、読む → 読みおわる、書く → 書きおわる). Conjugates as a u-verb (終わった、終わって). Also seen as ～終える.

Examples

• この本を読みおわったら、貸してあげるよ。

  このほんをよみおわったら、かしてあげるよ。

  Once I finish reading this book, I'll lend it to you.

• ご飯を食べおわってから、薬を飲んでください。

  ごはんをたべおわってから、くすりをのんでください。

  Please take the medicine after you finish eating.

• レポートをやっと書きおわった。

  レポートをやっとかきおわった。

  I finally finished writing the report.

Notes

• Connects to the ます-stem: 読みおわる (not 読むおわる).ます形につく：「読みおわる」（×読むおわる）。
• Typically used with verbs that have a clear duration/endpoint (read, eat, write); not natural with instantaneous verbs.ある程度時間のかかる動作（読む・食べる・書く）に使い、瞬間的な動詞には不自然。
• おわる here conjugates as a u-verb (おわった); the transitive 終える (おえる) is an alternative.「おわる」は五段活用（おわった）。他動詞の「終える」も使える。
