How it works

Indicates that a situation is the natural, logical conclusion drawn from previously stated information. It conveys 'that's why / no wonder / it follows that,' showing the speaker understands or accepts the reason behind something. It does not assert a brand-new reason but explains a result that makes sense given the context.

前に述べられた情報から、当然・論理的に導かれる結論であることを表します。「だから~なのだ」「どうりで~だ」という納得・帰結のニュアンスがあります。新しい理由を主張するのではなく、文脈から見て当然である結果を説明します。

Formation

Plain form + わけだ (verbs/イ-adj plain; ナ-adj + な + わけだ; Noun + な / という + わけだ)

Examples

  • かれはじゅうねんもアメリカにすんでいた。どうりでえいごがじょうずなわけだ。

He lived in America for ten years. No wonder his English is good.

  • そとはゆきがふっている。さむいわけだ。

    It's snowing outside. That's why it's cold.

  • かのじょはまいにちさんじかんれんしゅうしている。だからじょうずになるわけだ。

She practices three hours every day. So it makes sense that she gets good.

Notes

  • Connection: ナ-adjectives and nouns take な before わけだ (上手なわけだ, 学生なわけだ); a noun-reason can also use というわけだ.接続:な形容詞・名詞はなを付けます(上手なわけだ/学生なわけだ)。名詞の理由はというわけだも使えます。
  • Don't confuse with ~わけではない ('it's not that...') or ~わけにはいかない ('cannot afford to'); they are different patterns.~わけではない(~というわけではない)や~わけにはいかないとは別の文型なので混同しないこと。
  • わけだ states a logical/natural conclusion from context; it differs from から/ので, which simply give a reason.わけだは文脈からの論理的・当然の帰結を表し、単に理由を述べるから/のでとは異なります。
