ことだ

How it works

Used to give advice or a recommendation, telling someone the best thing to do in a situation. It states what one ought to do to achieve a goal or avoid a problem, often from a position of giving counsel.

ある状況で最も良い行動を相手に助言・忠告するときに使います。目的を達成したり問題を避けたりするために「~するのが一番だ」と諭す表現です。

Formation

Verb dictionary form + ことだ。Negative: Vない + ことだ. (Used with verbs of action, not with nouns/adjectives in this advice sense.)

Examples

  • にほんごがじょうずになりたいなら、まいにちれんしゅうすることだ。

If you want to get good at Japanese, you should practice every day.

  • かぜをはやくなおしたいなら、ゆっくりやすむことだ。

If you want to get over your cold quickly, you should rest well.

  • しっぱいしたくなければ、もっとはやくじゅんびをはじめることだ。

If you don't want to fail, you should start preparing earlier.

Notes

  • Don't confuse with ~ことがある (have done) or ~ことにする (decide to); ~ことだ here gives advice.「~ことがある」「~ことにする」と混同しない。ここでは助言の意味。
  • Carries an authoritative or instructive tone, so it can sound preachy to a superior—avoid using it toward your boss.上から諭す響きがあるため、目上の人に使うと失礼になりやすい。
  • Distinct from emotional ~ことだ (how + adjective), e.g. うれしいことだ.感嘆の「~ことだ」(うれしいことだ等)とは別の用法。
