～ちゃう／～じゃう

How it works

～ちゃう is the casual spoken contraction of ～てしまう, and ～じゃう is the contraction of ～でしまう (for verbs whose て-form is で). It carries the same nuances of completion or regret/unintendedness, but sounds casual and conversational. It conjugates like a regular う-verb (ちゃった, ちゃいます).

「～ちゃう」は「～てしまう」の、「～じゃう」は「～でしまう」の口語短縮形です。完了や後悔・意外という同じニュアンスを持ちますが、カジュアルで会話的に響きます。普通のう動詞のように活用します（ちゃった・ちゃいます）。

Formation

Verb て-form (て→ちゃ) + う / で-form (で→じゃ) + う → ～ちゃう／～じゃう

Examples

• あ、お皿を割っちゃった！

  あ、おさらをわっちゃった！

  Oh no, I broke the plate!

• 宿題、もう終わっちゃったよ。

  しゅくだい、もうおわっちゃったよ。

  I've already finished my homework.

• 全部飲んじゃったの？

  ぜんぶのんじゃったの？

  Did you drink it all?

Notes

• てしまう → ちゃう; でしまう → じゃう (飲んでしまう → 飲んじゃう, 死んでしまう → 死んじゃう).てしまう→ちゃう、でしまう→じゃう（飲んでしまう→飲んじゃう、死んでしまう→死んじゃう）。
• Casual register — avoid in formal writing or polite business situations; use てしまう/でしまう there.カジュアルな表現なので、改まった書き言葉や丁寧なビジネス場面では「てしまう／でしまう」を使います。
• Past is ～ちゃった／～じゃった; polite-ish casual ～ちゃいます is also heard.過去は「～ちゃった／～じゃった」。会話では「～ちゃいます」も使われます。
