How it works

~てある describes the resultant state left behind by someone's intentional action. It uses a transitive verb but takes が (not を), and the focus is on the current state, often implying the action was done in preparation for something.

~てあるは、誰かが意図的にした行為の結果として残っている状態を表します。他動詞を使いますが助詞は「が」を取り、ある目的のために前もって準備されたという含みを持つことが多いです。

Formation

Transitive verb て-form + ある(例:書く→書いてある、置く→置いてある)。目的語には「が」を用いる。

Examples

  • かべにカレンダーがはってあります。

A calendar has been put up on the wall.

  • もうばんごはんはつくってあるから、あんしんしてね。

Dinner has already been made, so don't worry.

  • ノートになまえがかいてあるので、すぐにわかります。

My name is written on the notebook, so it's easy to tell right away.

Notes

  • Use が with ~てある, not を: 窓が開けてある (the window has been left open intentionally), contrasting with 窓が開いている (just a state, ~ている).助詞は「を」ではなく「が」を使います:窓が開けてある(意図的に開けた結果)。
  • ~てある implies a person did the action on purpose, usually as preparation; ~ている with intransitive verbs is just a natural/accidental state.~てあるは「誰かが目的を持ってした」という意図を含み、自動詞+ているの単なる状態描写とは異なります。
