How it works
Introduces a hypothetical or possible situation and states what to do in that situation. It is more formal than ～時 and is common in rules, manuals, and instructions where you describe what happens under certain conditions.
ある仮定の状況・事態を取り上げ、その場合にどうするかを述べる表現です。「～時」よりかたく、規則・マニュアル・案内など、条件に応じた対応を示す文でよく使います。

Examples
地震が起きた場合は、すぐに机の下に入ってください。
じしんがおきたばあいは、すぐにつくえのしたにはいってください。
In the event of an earthquake, please get under a desk immediately.
雨の場合は、試合は中止になります。
あめのばあいは、しあいはちゅうしになります。
In case of rain, the match will be canceled.
わからない場合は、係の人に聞いてください。
わからないばあいは、かかりのひとにきいてください。

Notes
- Connection differs by word type: な-adj + な (元気な場合は), Noun + の (火事の場合は).接続に注意：な形容詞は「な」、名詞は「の」を付けます（元気な場合は・火事の場合は）。
- More formal/written than ～時; suited to regulations, notices, and procedures.「～時」よりかたい書き言葉的表現で、規則・掲示・手続きの説明に向きます。
- Often pairs with conditional nuance similar to ～たら/～と, but emphasizes a specific 'case/situation' rather than a time.「～たら」「～と」に近い条件の意味を持ちますが、時点よりも特定の「場合・状況」を強調します。
