How it works

Expresses that someone becomes aware of or realizes something they had not noticed before. The thing noticed is marked with に. It often describes a sudden or after-the-fact realization.

それまで気づかなかったことに、ふと・あとから気づくことを表します。気づいた対象は「に」で示します。突然の発見や後で分かったことに使われます。

Formation

Noun + に気がつく ; or Plain-form clause + こと + に気がつく (e.g. 間違いに気がつく / 落としたことに気がつく)

Examples

  • えきについてから、さいふをわすれたことにきがついた。

After arriving at the station, I realized I had forgotten my wallet.

  • だれもわたしのなまえのまちがいにきがつかなかった。

Nobody noticed the mistake in my name.

  • うしろからひとがきていることにきがつかなかった。

I didn't notice that someone was coming up behind me.

Notes

  • Use the particle に for what you notice, not を (○ 間違いに気がつく).気づく対象は「を」ではなく「に」で示します(○ 間違いに気がつく)。
  • To notice a fact (a whole clause), nominalize with こと: 〜ことに気がつく.文(事実)に気づくときは「こと」で名詞化します(~ことに気がつく)。
  • 気がつく (with が) and the shorter 気づく mean the same thing; 気づく is slightly more written/compact.「気がつく」と「気づく」は同じ意味で、「気づく」のほうがやや簡潔・書き言葉的です。
