~といわれている

How it works

Used to report a widely held belief, rumor, or commonly repeated statement without naming a specific source. Because it is the passive of 言う, the statement sounds objective and impersonal, as if society in general says it.

特定の人を主語にせず、世間で広く言われていること・通説・うわさを伝える表現です。「言う」の受身なので、誰か個人ではなく一般的に言われているという客観的な響きになります。

Formation

Plain-form sentence + と言われている (Na-adj/Noun: ~だと言われている) e.g. 体にいい→体にいいと言われている

Examples

  • りょくちゃはけんこうにいいといわれている。

Green tea is said to be good for your health.

  • このふるいおてらにはたからものがかくされているといわれている。

It is said that treasure is hidden in this old temple.

  • にほんじんははたらきすぎだとよくいわれている。

It is often said that Japanese people work too much.

Notes

  • The quote particle と attaches to a plain-form clause; with な-adjectives and nouns insert だ (静かだと言われている).引用の「と」は普通形に付き、な形容詞・名詞には「だ」を入れます(静かだと言われている)。
  • Reports general/public opinion, not what one specific person told you — for that, use ~と言っていた.特定の個人の発言ではなく一般論・通説を表します。誰かが言ったことを伝えるなら「~と言っていた」を使います。
  • Common in essays, news, and explanations; very natural with adverbs like よく (often) or 一般に (generally).評論・ニュース・説明文でよく使い、「よく」「一般に」などの副詞となじみます。
