~い→~くない

i-adjective negative (is not ...)

い形容詞の否定形(〜くない)

JLPT

neutral

How it works

To make the negative of an i-adjective, drop the final い and add くない. For polite speech, add です (〜くないです) or use the 〜くありません form. The irregular いい (good) becomes よくない.

い形容詞の否定形は、語尾の「い」を取って「くない」を付けます。ていねいに言うときは「〜くないです」か「〜くありません」にします。「いい」は不規則で「よくない」になります。

Formation

i-adj (drop い) + くない (+ です for polite) / 〜くありません; いい → よくない

Examples

  • このへやはあまりひろくないです。

    This room isn't very spacious.

  • きょうはそんなにさむくない。

    It's not that cold today.

  • そのやりかたはよくありません。

That way of doing it is not good.

Notes

  • いい becomes よくない (and よくありません), not いくない.「いい」は「いくない」ではなく「よくない(よくありません)」になります。
  • 〜くないです and 〜くありません mean the same; 〜くありません is slightly more formal.「〜くないです」と「〜くありません」は同じ意味で、「〜くありません」のほうが少しかたいです。
  • Past negative is 〜くなかった (です): e.g. 寒くなかったです ('it wasn't cold').過去の否定は「〜くなかった(です)」です。例:寒くなかったです。
