How it works

To make the past tense of a na-adjective, drop the な and add だった in casual speech. In polite speech, use でした (e.g. 元気でした). Like nouns, na-adjectives use the copula だ/です, so the past is だった/でした.

な形容詞の過去形は、普通形では「な」を取って「だった」を付けます。ていねいに言うときは「でした」を使います(例:元気でした)。な形容詞は名詞と同じく「だ・です」を使うので、過去形は「だった・でした」になります。

Formation

na-adj (drop な) + だった (casual) / でした (polite)

Examples

  • きのうのパーティーはにぎやかだった。

    Yesterday's party was lively.

  • こどものとき、わたしはやさいがきらいでした。

When I was a child, I disliked vegetables.

  • まちはとてもしずかだった。

    The town was very quiet.

Notes

  • Unlike i-adjectives, na-adjectives form their past with だった/でした (the same pattern as nouns), not かった.い形容詞と違い、な形容詞の過去形は名詞と同じ「だった・でした」で作ります(「かった」ではありません)。
  • The な only appears before a noun (静かな町); before だ/だった/です/でした, drop the な.「な」は名詞の前だけに付きます(静かな町)。だ・だった・です・でしたの前では「な」を取ります。
  • Polite past でした is correct here (元気でした), unlike with i-adjectives where 〜いでした is wrong.な形容詞では「でした」が正しいです(元気でした)。い形容詞の「〜いでした」は誤りなので区別しましょう。
