なる

How it works

なる expresses a change of state or condition, equivalent to 'to become.' With i-adjectives, drop the final い and add くなる (e.g. 寒い → 寒くなる). With na-adjectives and nouns, add になる (e.g. 静か → 静かになる, 先生 → 先生になる). It describes natural or resulting change rather than a deliberate action.

「なる」は状態の変化を表します。い形容詞は語尾の「い」を取って「くなる」(寒い→寒くなる)、な形容詞と名詞は「になる」(静か→静かになる、先生→先生になる)を付けます。意図的な行為ではなく、自然な変化や結果としての変化を表します。

Formation

い-Adjective (-い→-く) + なる / な-Adjective + に + なる / Noun + に + なる

Examples

  • はるになって、あたたかくなりました。

Spring came, and it got warm.

  • あにはらいねん、いしゃになります。

My older brother will become a doctor next year.

  • よるになると、まちがしずかになります。

When night falls, the town becomes quiet.

Notes

  • i-adjectives use くなる, NOT になる: 寒い → 寒くなる (not 寒いになる).い形容詞は「くなる」を使い、「になる」は使いません。例:寒い→寒くなる(×寒いになる)。
  • Contrast with する: なる = something becomes (intransitive change); する = someone makes something into (deliberate).「する」と対比:「なる」は自然になる変化、「する」は意図的に〜にすること。
