How it works

Noun + にする means 'to decide on' or 'to choose' something, typically used when selecting from options (food on a menu, a plan, an item to buy). It expresses the speaker's deliberate choice. For example コーヒーにします = 'I'll have coffee / I'll go with coffee.'

「名詞+にする」は「〜に決める/〜を選ぶ」という意味で、選択肢の中から選ぶとき(メニューの料理、予定、買う物など)によく使います。話し手の意図的な選択を表します。例:コーヒーにします=「コーヒーにします(コーヒーを選びます)」。

Examples

  • わたしはカレーにします。

I'll have curry. / I'll go with the curry.

  • りょこうはらいげつにしましょう。

Let's make the trip next month.

  • のみものはなににしますか。

What will you have to drink?

Notes

  • 〜にする (choose/decide) differs from 〜になる (become): する is a deliberate decision, なる is a natural change.「〜にする」(選ぶ・決める)は「〜になる」(なる)と違い、意図的な決定を表します。
  • Used mainly with nouns for selection; for 'decide to do (verb),' use 〜ことにする.選択の場合は名詞と使います。「〜することに決める」は「〜ことにする」を使います。
