んです・のです

How it works

〜んです (more formal のです) adds an explanatory or emphatic nuance, presenting information as a reason or background explanation. It often answers 'why?' or sets up a request/clarification. 〜のです is the more formal/written form, while 〜んです is the colloquial spoken form; both are polite. The plain (casual) forms are 〜んだ/のだ. Use it when explaining a situation rather than just stating a neutral fact.

「〜んです」(よりかたい書き言葉的な形は「のです」)は、理由・説明・強調のニュアンスを加え、情報を理由や背景として示します。「どうして?」への答えや前置きによく使います。「んです」は「のです」の口語形で、どちらも丁寧体です。普通体は「んだ・のだ」。単なる事実ではなく状況を説明するときに使います。

Examples

  • どうしておくれたんですか。

Why is it that you were late?

  • あたまがいたいんです。すこしやすみます。

    It's that I have a headache. I'll rest a little.

  • あのひとはがくせいなんです。

It's that that person is a student.

Notes

  • After な-adjectives and nouns, insert な before んです: 学生なんです (not 学生んです).な形容詞・名詞の後は「な」を入れます。例:学生なんです(×学生んです)。
  • Don't overuse it for plain neutral facts; it implies there is a reason or explanation behind the statement.中立的な事実をただ述べるときに使いすぎないこと。背景や理由がある含みになります。
