How it works

Te-form + いる expresses an ongoing action ("is ~ing"), a resulting state ("is ~ed"), or a habit. With motion/change verbs it usually means a continuing state, not progressive action.

て形+いるは、進行中の動作(〜している)、結果の状態(〜してある状態)、習慣などを表します。瞬間動詞や変化動詞では「進行」ではなく「結果の状態」になることが多いです。

Formation

Vて-form + いる (polite: ~ています; casual contraction: ~てる)

Examples

  • いま、ほんをよんでいます。

I'm reading a book right now.

  • あねはとうきょうにすんでいます。

My older sister lives in Tokyo.

  • まどがあいています。

    The window is open.

Notes

  • With verbs like 知る, 住む, 結婚する, 持つ, ~ている expresses a state, not an action in progress.「知る・住む・結婚する・持つ」などでは、進行ではなく状態を表します。
  • 知っている is "to know"; its negative is 知りません (not 知っていません).「知っている」は「知っている状態」を表し、否定は「知りません」(×知っていません)です。
  • In casual speech いる is often dropped: 読んでる, 食べてる.話し言葉では「い」が落ちて「読んでる」「食べてる」となることが多いです。
