あとで

How it works

Indicates that the main action happens after another action or event is completed. The verb before 後で is in the た-form (plain past), showing the action is finished. With nouns use の後で. Often interchangeable with てから, though 後で focuses on temporal order rather than 'right after'.

主たる動作が別の動作や出来事が終わった後に起こることを表します。「後で」の前の動詞はた形(プレーン過去)で、その動作が完了していることを示します。名詞には「の後で」を使います。「てから」と似ていますが、「後で」は時間的な前後関係を表します。

Formation

Vた-form + 後で / Nの + 後で(例:食べた後で、授業の後で)

Examples

  • ごはんをたべたあとでくすりをのみます。

    I take medicine after eating.

  • じゅぎょうのあとでとしょかんへいきました。

After class, I went to the library.

  • しゅくだいをしたあとでテレビをみてもいいです。

You may watch TV after you do your homework.

Notes

  • The verb before 後で must be in た-form, even if the whole sentence is non-past (食べた後で飲みます).「後で」の前の動詞は、文全体が非過去でも必ずた形です(食べた後で飲みます)。
  • Use の後で after nouns (授業の後で).名詞には「の後で」を付けます。
  • The で can be dropped in casual writing (〜後), but 後で is the standard N5 form.「で」を省いて「〜後」とも言えますが、N5では「後で」が基本形です。
