How it works

Vてから means 'after doing X (then Y).' It emphasizes that the second action happens only after the first is completed, stressing sequence. Unlike 〜た後で, it highlights that X is a prerequisite step. The first verb takes the て-form plus から.

「〜てから」は「〜した後で(それから〜)」という意味です。一つ目の動作が完了してから二つ目の動作をする、という順序を強調します。「〜た後で」と違い、一つ目が前提・条件となるニュアンスがあります。一つ目の動詞はて形に「から」を付けます。

Formation

Verb て-form + から (e.g. 食べて → 食べてから)

Examples

  • てをあらってから、ごはんをたべます。

After washing my hands, I eat.

  • にほんへきてから、さんねんになります。

It has been three years since I came to Japan.

  • しごとがおわってから、かいものにいきます。

After work finishes, I'll go shopping.

Notes

  • Use only one 〜てから per sentence chain; for several sequential actions, use the plain て-form for the rest.一つの文に「〜てから」は基本一回。連続する動作はその後をて形でつなぎます。
  • 〜てから (after doing) differs from から meaning 'because'; here から follows the て-form to mark sequence.「〜てから」(後で)は理由の「から」とは別。ここではて形に付いて順序を表します。
