How it works
Marks the time or situation in which something happens. The tense of the clause before 時 matters: dictionary form means 'when/before doing X' (the main action happens before or during), while た-form means 'when/after X has happened'. Connects to nouns with の, na-adjectives with な, and i-adjectives directly.
ある事が起こる時や状況を表します。「時」の前の節の時制が重要で、辞書形なら「Xするとき(前・途中)」、た形なら「Xしたとき(後)」を表します。名詞には「の」、ナ形容詞には「な」、イ形容詞は直接付きます。
Formation
V辞書形/Vた形 + 時 / イ形 + 時 / Naな + 時 / Nの + 時(例:行く時、行った時、若い時、暇な時、子供の時)
Examples
日本へ行く時、カメラを買います。
にほんへいくとき、カメラをかいます。
When I go to Japan (before going), I will buy a camera.
子供の時、よく川で泳ぎました。
こどものとき、よくかわでおよぎました。
When I was a child, I often swam in the river.
暇な時、何をしますか。
ひまなとき、なにをしますか。
What do you do when you have free time?
Notes
- Dictionary form before 時 = the main action happens before/at that time; た-form = after that action is complete (家を出る時 vs 家を出た時).「時」の前が辞書形なら動作の前・同時、た形ならその動作の後を表します(家を出る時/家を出た時)。
- Connect nouns with の (子供の時), na-adjectives with な (暇な時).名詞は「の」、ナ形容詞は「な」で接続します。
- とき is often written in kana, especially when abstract; both 時 and とき are correct.抽象的な場合は「とき」とひらがなで書くことが多いです。
