How it works

の links two nouns, where the first modifies or describes the second. It expresses possession (私の本 = my book), belonging/attribute (日本の車 = a Japanese car), and the relationship 'A's B / B of A'. It can also nominalize or stand in for an omitted noun (赤いの = the red one).

「の」は二つの名詞をつなぎ、前の名詞が後ろの名詞を修飾します。所有(私の本)、所属・属性(日本の車)、「AのB(AのB)」の関係を表します。省略された名詞の代わり(赤いの=赤いもの)にもなります。

Formation

Noun(A) + の + Noun(B) → 'A's B / B of A'

Examples

  • これはわたしのほんです。

    This is my book.

  • にほんごのせんせいはやさしいです。

The Japanese (language) teacher is kind.

  • あかいのをください。

Please give me the red one.

Notes

  • の can chain: 私の友達の車 = 'my friend's car'.「の」は連続して使えます(私の友達の車)。
  • It can replace a noun already understood from context (赤いの = 'the red one').文脈で分かる名詞の代わりにもなります(赤いの=赤いもの)。
  • Do not insert の between a な-adjective and its noun; な-adjectives use な (きれいな花, NOT きれいの花).ナ形容詞と名詞の間には「の」ではなく「な」を使います(きれいな花)。
