How it works

で marks the location where an action takes place (図書館で勉強する) and also the means, tool, or method by which something is done (電車で行く, 箸で食べる). Distinguish it from に, which marks existence location and destination.

「で」は動作が行われる場所(図書館で勉強する)や、手段・道具・方法(電車で行く、箸で食べる)を示します。存在の場所や到達点を示す「に」とは区別します。

Formation

Noun(place/means) + で + action verb

Examples

  • としょかんでべんきょうします。

    I study at the library.

  • でんしゃでかいしゃへいきます。

I go to the office by train.

  • にほんごではなしましょう。

    Let's talk in Japanese.

Notes

  • で = where an ACTION happens; に = where something EXISTS. 公園で遊ぶ vs 公園にいる.「で」は動作の場所、「に」は存在の場所です(公園で遊ぶ/公園にいる)。
  • で also marks tools/means/language: ペンで書く, バスで行く, 英語で話す.「で」は道具・手段・言語も示します(ペンで書く、バスで行く、英語で話す)。
  • Do not confuse the location で with the て-form of だ (which is also で); context distinguishes them.場所の「で」と、だの「て形」の「で」は別物。文脈で判断します。
