How it works

To make the past tense of an i-adjective, drop the final い and add かった. In polite speech, add です after the かった form (NOT でした). The irregular いい (good) becomes よかった.

い形容詞の過去形は、語尾の「い」を取って「かった」を付けます。ていねいに言うときは「〜かった」の後に「です」を付けます(「でした」ではありません)。「いい」は不規則で「よかった」になります。

Formation

i-adj (drop い) + かった (+ です for polite); いい → よかった

Examples

  • きのうのえいがはおもしろかったです。

    Yesterday's movie was interesting.

  • このなつはとてもあつかった。

    This summer was very hot.

  • りょこうはたのしくて、てんきもよかったです。

The trip was fun, and the weather was good too.

Notes

  • Never say 〜いでした (e.g. 暑いでした is wrong); the correct polite past is 〜かったです (暑かったです).「暑いでした」は誤りです。ていねいな過去形は「暑かったです」です。
  • いい becomes よかった, not いかった.「いい」は「いかった」ではなく「よかった」になります。
  • The です after かった adds politeness only and does not change the tense (the かった already marks past).「かった」の後の「です」はていねいさを加えるだけで、時制は「かった」で表します。
