How it works

それから is a sentence-initial conjunction meaning 'and then' or 'after that.' It emphasizes the order of events, presenting what happens next in a sequence. It can also mean 'and also / in addition' when listing extra items.

「それから」は文頭に置く接続詞で、「その後で・次に」という意味です。出来事の順序を強調し、次に何が起こるかを示します。物を付け加えて並べるとき(〜、それから〜も)にも使えます。

Formation

Sentence 1. + それから、+ Sentence 2. / Noun, + それから + Noun

Examples

  • しゅくだいをしました。それから、テレビをみました。

I did my homework. After that, I watched TV.

  • パンをかいました。それから、ぎゅうにゅうもかいました。

I bought bread. And then I also bought milk.

  • まずてをあらってください。それから、ごはんをたべましょう。

First, please wash your hands. After that, let's eat.

Notes

  • それから stresses sequence/'after that' more than そして, which can simply mean 'and.'「それから」は「そして」より「その後で」という順序を強調します。
  • It also works for adding extra items to a list ('and also').リストに物を付け加える(〜も)ときにも使えます。
  • Often pairs with まず ('first') to lay out steps in order.「まず」と一緒に使って手順を順番に説明することが多いです。
