はが、は

How it works

The particle は can be used to mark two topics being contrasted. The first clause states something about A, and the second uses は again to present B in contrast, often joined by が ('but'). It highlights the difference between two things.

助詞「は」を使って二つの話題を対比する表現。前半でAについて述べ、後半でも「は」を使ってBを対比的に示し、多くは「が(しかし)」でつなぐ。二つのものの違いを際立たせる。

Examples

  • コーヒーはすきですが、おちゃはすきじゃありません。

As for coffee, I like it, but as for tea, I don't.

  • あにはせがたかいですが、おとうとはひくいです。

My older brother is tall, but my younger brother is short.

  • なつはあついですが、ふゆはさむいです。

Summers are hot, but winters are cold.

Notes

  • The contrastive は marks the two items being compared, not the grammatical subject.対比の「は」は比べる二つの要素を示す(主語マーカーとは限らない)。
  • が here means 'but,' connecting the two contrasting clauses.ここでの「が」は「しかし」の意味で前後をつなぐ。
  • Even something normally marked by を or が can switch to は for contrast (例: 肉は食べるが…).本来「を・が」で示す語も、対比のときは「は」になることがある。
