しかない

How it works

Expresses limitation meaning 'only,' but it must be paired with a negative verb. It carries a nuance of 'no more than that / that's all there is,' often implying the amount is insufficient or less than expected. Compare with だけ, which is neutral and uses an affirmative verb.

「~だけ」と同じく限定を表すが、必ず否定の述語と一緒に使う。「それ以上はない/それだけしかない」というニュアンスで、量が少ない・足りないという気持ちを含むことが多い。肯定で使う中立的な「だけ」と対比される。

Formation

Noun (+ particle) + しか + Verb-ない / Counter + しか + Verb-ない

Examples

  • さいふのなかにひゃくえんしかありません。

I have only 100 yen in my wallet.

  • にほんごはすこししかはなせません。

I can speak only a little Japanese.

  • このみせはにちようびしかあいていません。

This shop is open only on Sundays.

Notes

  • Always requires a negative verb (~ない), unlike だけ which takes an affirmative verb.「だけ」と違い、必ず否定形(~ない)を伴う。
  • Carries a 'not enough / that's all' nuance, often slightly negative in feeling.「これだけしかない」という不足・少なさの気持ちを含むことが多い。
  • しか usually replaces は, が, and を, but stays with other particles (例: ~にしか, ~でしか).「は・が・を」は「しか」に置き換わるが、ほかの助詞には付く(~にしか・~でしか)。
