How it works

Dictionary form + ところだ means 'be just about to do' something — the action has not started yet but is imminent. It is often used with まさに or これから, or in the form 今~ところだ.

Formation

Verb dictionary form +

Examples

I'm just about to go out right now.

When you called, I was just about to eat.

Watch out! I almost crashed into a car.

Notes

  • Use the dictionary (plain non-past) form for 'about to'. 食べるところ = about to eat; 食べているところ = in the middle of eating; 食べたところ = just finished eating.「これからする」は辞書形を使います。
