How it works

~ているところだ expresses that an action is currently in progress — you are right in the middle of doing it. It emphasizes the ongoing moment, often with 今 or ちょうど.

Formation

Examples

I'm in the middle of writing my report right now.

As for the cause, we're currently in the process of investigating it.

Right in the middle of eating, the phone rang.

Notes

  • Use the ~ている form for an action in progress; contrast 食べるところ (about to) / 食べたところ (just finished).
  • With ~ているところに/へ you can mark the moment another event interrupts.「~ているところに/へ」で、別の出来事が割り込む瞬間を表せます。
