How it works

~てくる expresses a change or action that has continued from the past up to the present, the emergence/appearance of something, or doing an action before coming back. It captures movement or change approaching the present moment.

Formation

Examples

Lately, I've gradually come to understand Japanese.

It suddenly started to rain, so I borrowed an umbrella.

I'll go buy a drink at the convenience store (and come back).

Notes

  • For gradual change, ~てきた = up to now; ~ていく = from now on.
  • ~てくる also means 'go do X and come back' (買ってくる) or 'X begins/appears' (見えてくる, 降ってくる).~てくるには「~して戻って来る」(買ってくる)や「現れ始める」(見えてくる)の意味もあります。
