～たらいい

How it works

Uses the ～たら conditional + いい to give advice or express a desirable situation — 'you should X' / 'it would be good if X'. With ～たらいいのに or ～たらいいなあ it can express a wish or regret. Question ～たらいい(ですか) asks 'what should I do?'.

「～たら」に「いい」をつけて、助言や望ましい事柄を表す「～したらいい」。「～たらいいのに／～たらいいなあ」で願望や残念な気持ちを表す。「～たらいいですか」で「どうしたらいいか」と尋ねられる。

Formation

Verb た-form + ら + いい（例：行ったらいい、食べたらいい、したらいい）

Examples

• 頭が痛いなら、この薬を飲んだらいいよ。

  あたまがいたいなら、このくすりをのんだらいいよ。

  If you have a headache, you should take this medicine.

• 週末、晴れたらいいなあ。

  しゅうまつ、はれたらいいなあ。

  I hope it's sunny this weekend.

• 初めての海外旅行、何を準備したらいいですか。

  はじめてのかいがいりょこう、なにをじゅんびしたらいいですか。

Notes

• Use the た-form + ら (飲む→飲んだら, する→したら, 来る→きたら).動詞は「た形＋ら」にする（飲む→飲んだら、する→したら、来る→きたら）。
• ～たらいいなあ / ～たらいいのに expresses a wish or 'I wish it were so' regret.「～たらいいなあ／～たらいいのに」で願望や「～ならいいのに」という気持ちを表す。
• Very close to ～ばいい; ～たらいい often sounds a bit softer and more conversational.「～ばいい」に非常に近いが、「～たらいい」のほうがやわらかく会話的に響くことが多い。
