How it works

~ていく expresses a change or action that continues away from the present moment into the future, or an action done before moving away (physically/temporally). It captures a sense of progression heading forward.

~ていくは、現在を起点として未来へ向かって変化や動作が続いていくこと、または何かをしてから離れていくことを表します。前方・未来への進行の感覚があります。

Formation

Verb て-form + いく(例:増える→増えていく、歩く→歩いていく)

Examples

  • これからじんこうはもっとへっていくでしょう。

From now on, the population will probably keep decreasing.

  • まいにちすこしずつにほんごをべんきょうしていきます。

I will keep studying Japanese little by little every day.

  • あさごはんをたべていくじかんがなかった。

I didn't have time to eat breakfast (before leaving).

Notes

  • For change verbs, ~ていく points to the future (will go on), while ~てくる points from the past up to now.変化を表す動詞では、~ていくは未来へ、~てくるは過去から現在までを表します。
  • In casual speech いく often becomes く: 食べてく, 続けてく.話し言葉では「いく」が「く」になることがあります:食べてく、やってく。
