How it works

~とともに has two main uses: (1) 'together with' someone or something, often in a slightly formal tone, and (2) 'as / at the same time as', expressing that one change accompanies another change. With nouns of people it means doing something together; with nouns/verbs expressing change it shows two things changing in parallel.

「~とともに」には主に二つの意味がある。(1)「~と一緒に」人や物と共に何かをする、ややかたい言い方。(2)「~と同時に・~につれて」ある変化に伴って別の変化が起こることを表す。人を表す名詞では「一緒に」、変化を表す語では「~につれて」に近い意味になる。

Formation

Noun + とともに / Verb(plain non-past) + とともに

Examples

  • かぞくとともにあたらしいまちへひっこした。

I moved to a new town together with my family.

  • としをとるとともに、たいりょくがおちてきた。

As I grow older, my physical strength has been declining.

  • ぎじゅつのしんぽとともに、せいかつもべんりになった。

Along with the advance of technology, life has also become more convenient.

Notes

  • More formal than 〜と一緒に; common in writing and speeches.「~と一緒に」よりかたく、文章やスピーチでよく使う。
  • When meaning 'as/along with a change', it overlaps with 〜につれて and 〜にしたがって.変化を表すときは「~につれて」「~にしたがって」と意味が近い。
  • After a noun no と is needed (家族とともに, not 家族のとともに).名詞に直接つく(家族とともに)。「の」は不要。
